Fujifilm F50fd

F50fd

Fujifilm F50fd camera is launched end of year 2007. It's the replacement of Fujifilm's popular F31fd camera. The predecessor is famous with it superb ISO performance & battery life. Most of the people may wondering whether this newcomer could outperform it predecessor. Disappointed to say that. It's NOT & even worst than its predecessor F31fd. Fujifilm F50fd comes with 12MP CCD Sensor, Face Detection 2.0 Engine, dual memory card types (xD/SD) support & CCD shifted Image Stabilizer system.

Shopping Experience
I have a hard time in getting this camera because most of the camera shops didn't sell Fujifilm cameras. Even some of them are but the price is as retail price at RM1299 with no freebies. You may seen someone is selling this F50fd online with RM900-RM1000 but all this price range is for F50fd camera imported directly from Japan & the warranty is carry by the seller but not the Fujifilm Malaysia. At last, I got this camera at RM1190 in Foto Shangri-La with Fujifilm leather camera bag, screen protector, 2GB Kingston SD card & small tripod. Is it a good deal? I don't think so but I have no choice since many shops I visited didn't sell Fujifilm cameras.

The Outlook
Fujifilm has totally redesign its F series camera since F40fd. It's stylish & slimmer than camera before. With the new design, it cramped the camera into 25cm width only. Also, it comes 2.5" sharp & bright LCD screen with 180 degrees viewing angle. Make it moving towards the current standard of trendy camera available in the market. Also, dial mode has been replaced into the rear side to ensure easy switching among different capture modes.

Performance
When we talk about Fujifilm F series camera, most of the people already know that we buy it because of its ISO performance & Intelligent Face Detection Engine. However, I think we're truly disappointed with the new F50fd ISO performance since it's poorly perform compared with F31fd. You may still able to use the photo captured in ISO lower than 400 but when raise to ISO 800 & above, none of them are usable even printed in 4R size. However, I should say still its ISO performance is better than other rivals.

The camera startup speed is average in 2 second. Object focusing speed is slower than F31fd especially Face Detection mode is on. Even the Face Detection engine is upgraded into version 2 with more face angle support but still it's far more slower than before & inaccurate. Also, it's noisy during object focusing. Video capturing is downgraded into 25fps & the video is full of noise especially video captured at night time.

I was disappointed with most of the pictures I took at initial stage but after few tuning & practice I able to control the camera with better picture output. Still, it's not that sharp & clear pictures output as F31fd. The new CCD shifted Image Stabilizer system is not that effective compared with other cameras I tested. Also, it drain the battery life faster if it's on. Due to its slimmer design, battery life has cut down to 230 shots in CIPA standards. Not even half of the F31fd battery life.

Conclusion
Overall, I can't say I will recommended it to all but I would say. For this price tag & features. I think F50fd is one of the best 12MP cameras available in the market. It may failed to outperforms its predecessor but it done a very good job compared with other rivals.

Here are some of the samples shots I took using F50fd. Enjoy!
